Late calls that are unnecessary mean that the doctor may not be able to attend someone that requires emergency treatment. When the surgery is closed a recorded message will give you the number of the emergency doctor. This may not be the doctor that you normally see; it may be a doctor that is employed by our out-of-hours provider, Primecare.
All calls to the out of hours service are triaged by Primecare, who will then provide advice or arrange a visit by a GP. The doctor on-call will use their professional discretion when offering advice or deciding to visit. You may also be offered the opportunity to attend a local primary care centre. These centres are specialist units and you will normally be seen quicker than waiting for a doctor to call.
